Outdoor activities
Downstream the river Vecht flows through Oud Zuilen, Maarssen, Breukelen, Loenen and Nigtevecht. These places are all worth visiting.
There are many cycle and walking routes clearly marked. You can also swim in the Maarseveense Plassen, sail on the Loosdrechtse Plassen and sail in a sloop on the river Vecht. One possible route (only in dutch) is to download here. In the small village of Oud Zuilen you can find Slot Zuylen. During 18th Century this medieval castle was converted to a country house and is now a museum. The most famous occupant was the author Belle van Zuylen.
The city of Amsterdam can be reached in 30 minute by car.
The city of Utrecht
offers many interesting museums, beautiful relaxing views along the canal and many shops.
The museum quarter is in the historical centre of the city and The National Museum from Speelklok to Piermont, Museum Catharijne Convent, Dutch Railway Museum, University Museum/Hortus botonist, Central Museum, ASTRE Guard Sonnenbrogh, and Aboriginal Art Museum, are all within walking distance of each other.
The downtown area of the city is full of medieval houses, churches, art galleries, restaurants and outside cafes. At the Tourist Information and Visitor Centre RonDom there are many individual walks for sale which last for approximately 1 hour.
Utrecht is a modern dynamic city - it has a covered shopping centre Hoog Catharijne and one of the most beautiful train stations of the centre of the Netherlands.
Utrecht can also be explored from the water of the canals and the river Kromme Rijn on water cycle or in a canoe.
